Credit unions differ from Banks in that every member owns at least one share within the Credit Union. Via their local credit union delegate, each member also has a say in both the provincial and national direction of the Association. Just as other financial institutions, was credit unions offer individuals and businesses savings and checking accounts, term deposits, retirement packages, mortgages, and various other business services. Here's our listing of a few of Canada's larger credit unions.

Credit unions and caisses populaires are co-operative financial institutions owned and controlled by their members. Their ownership and corporate governance are based on co-operative principles, and their main purpose is to provide deposit and loan services to members. In most provinces, each customer is required to become a member of the credit union or caisse populaire. Each member has one vote, regardless of the size of deposit or share capital held.

Coast Capital Savings
Coast Capital Savings is a credit union based in British Columbia, and is the second largest Credit Union in Canada. Coast Capital Savings currently offers VISA through Desjardins, a credit union in Quebec.

Credit Union Atlantic
Credit Union Atlantic is a locally owned financial institution serving the needs of individuals and businesses in the Halifax Regional Municipality. With over 14,000 members, Credit Union Atlantic is the largest credit union in Nova Scotia, and has six locations in the Halifax Regional Municipality.

First Calgary Savings and Credit Union
First Calgary Savings is the banking alternative for Calgarians, serving approximately 100,000 member-owners at 15 branch locations.

Caisses Populaires de L'Ontario
Caisses populaires de l'Ontario is in northern Ontario-based credit Union with 13 outlets.

Meridian Credit Union
Meridian Credit Union is an amalgamation of Hepcoe credit union and Niagara credit union, and operates throughout southern Ontario. It has over 40 branches.

Westminster Savings and Credit Union
Westminster savings and credit union is a British Columbia-based credit Union currently with 10 branches. They're currently partnered with VISA Desjardins for their credit card.
