Changing Your Address [or, Alice doesn't live here any more]

Now that you've completed your move, it's time to begin the tedious task of notifying everyone that you have changed your address. If we here at Movers North America have learned anything about this, it is that by the time you finish your address change, it will probably be time to move again.

With this in mind, we have put together a list of advice and web site links in order to aid you in your address change. While we can't promise that the task will be any less boring, at least this way it will be faster. But no matter what, you can be sure that your address change will be like pulling off a bandage.

Even though we'll do it together quickly, it's still going to hurt. So let's get started.

Banks/Credit Unions

Transferring your account to another bank branch is generally a relatively painless procedure in Canada, given its national banking system. Credit unions and American Banks often can be considerably more regional however, so the certain to arrange with both your old and new financial institution well before the move.

Insurance Companies

Just as with your financial institutions, you may be able to simply transfer your accounts to wherever you're moving depending upon the size of your insurance company. Before your move you should check with your agent to see whether your homeowner's policy covers your possessions during the move. If not, you may wish to consider purchasing further coverage. And don't forget about your automobile insurance as well.
If you have automatic monthly withdrawals with any insurer you'll need to tell them that you’re changing your financial institution.

Schools

If you have children, the certain to inform the school that they are currently attending what the day of their departure will be. Also gives the new address of whatever school they will be starting at after the move. The new school will need to know the day that your children will be beginning their attendance after the move. And don't forget to notify your old high school and university in case you want to remain on their mailing lists. You don't want to miss that 20th anniversary invitation!

Remember to set up the power and water at your new home. Try to have your telephone set up in your new home for the first day that you move in, and at your old home keep your telephone service until the day that you move out. And don't forget about your cell phone either! Depending upon how far you're moving, you'll probably want to pick up a new SIMM card.

Volunteer Organizations

Depending upon the size of the organization to which you belong, you may simply be able to transfer your membership to your new city.
